Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is confident that she has identified one of the candidates for the presidency in 2028, and it is not a name that appears frequently on many lists.
The 85-year-old Democratic representative is of the opinion that former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will seek the Democratic nomination.
“I believe he is going to run,” she stated during an interview with “The Free Press” that was published on Friday.
In the same article, when Emanuel was inquired about his well-being, he humorously responded, “I don’t have prostate cancer.”
It followed a statement made by his brother, Zeke, on MSNBC, where he expressed his belief that former President Joe Biden had cancer during his time in the White House.
“Oh yes. He did not develop [prostate cancer] in the last 100 days or 200 days. He had it while serving as president. He likely had it from the beginning of his presidency in 2021. Indeed, I believe there is no disagreement regarding that,” stated the brother of the former Chicago Mayor.
In an interview with The Free Press, the former mayor identified himself as a traditional Democrat, expressing a lack of concern for the ‘woke’ issues that have troubled his party as its approval ratings have reached unprecedented lows.
“We must not allow ourselves to be sidetracked by cultural matters and lose focus on the issues that resonate with Americans and affect their lives, which fundamentally relates to the pursuit of the American dream,” Emanuel stated.
“It is essential for us to confront the interest groups. We cannot appear feeble or overly progressive,” he added.
He refrained from directly addressing the reporter’s inquiry regarding a presidential campaign, stating, “Prior to making a decision, I wish to ensure that I have a solution to what I believe is troubling our nation, our political landscape, and our party—and these issues may all share a common solution.”
However, he provided a significant clue to the reporter, Peter Savodnik, when he remarked, “I am clear about my intentions … We must prepare to advocate for America—and that is precisely what I intend to do.”
Regarding Pelosi, she faces more pressing issues than determining who will be her party’s presidential nominee in 2028, as her legacy is at stake.
Pelosi holds the distinction of being the first female Speaker in American history and has successfully maintained even her narrow majorities for landmark votes. She may well be considered one of the most impactful Speakers in history.
Nonetheless, her enduring legacy may be the creation of a law named in her honor that forbids members of Congress and their spouses from engaging in stock trading, following the wealth she and her husband amassed over the years, as reported by Fox News.
What complicates matters for the former Speaker is that the initiative enjoys bipartisan support, with members from her own party endorsing what has been referred to in the Senate as the Preventing Elected Leaders from Owning Securities and Investments (PELOSI) Act.
On Wednesday, Missouri Republican Rep. Mark Alford presented his version aimed at prohibiting congressional stock trading, which he described as “complementary” to the legislation proposed by Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley in the Senate.
“As public servants, we ought to hold ourselves to a higher standard and avoid even the appearance of corruption,” Alford stated in a press release. “Regrettably, an excessive number of Congress members are participating in questionable stock trades based on non-public information to enrich themselves. These egregious breaches of public trust underscore the necessity for us to take decisive action to prohibit members and their spouses from owning or selling individual stocks.”
“Members of Congress ought to be advocating for the constituents they were elected to represent—not engaging in day trading at the detriment of their constituents,” Hawley remarked.
“Americans have witnessed politician after politician profiting from information that is not accessible to the general public. It is imperative that we prohibit all members of Congress from trading and holding stocks to restore the trust of Americans in our nation’s legislative body,” Hawley further stated.
