Fans expressed their outrage after former Vice President Kamala Harris and her spouse Doug Emhoff were seen carrying plastic bags during a recent visit to a grocery store.
Harris, 60, who previously championed a ban on plastic straws during her unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2019, was spotted at the 99 Ranch Market Asian Grocery store in Westwood, California, on Thursday.
Amid ongoing speculation regarding her marriage to Doug Emhoff, fans quickly highlighted another issue with their outing: the use of plastic bags.
“WTF? Is that Kamala Harris carrying a #plastic bag of groceries?? What an out-of-touch HYPOCRITE with zero self-awareness!” one user remarked on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Harris first endorsed the plastic ban during a climate change town hall hosted by CNN in September 2019.
“I think we should, yes,” Harris responded when asked about her support for the initiative. She laughed, noting that using a paper straw was “difficult,” and suggested that improvements were needed for alternatives.
“We gotta kind of perfect that one a little bit more,” she added. Some fans speculated that the entire grocery trip was “staged,” suggesting that the fading politician ventured out to attract attention. Others defended the former presidential candidate, asserting that the bags were actually “eco-friendly” and “reusable.”A brief clarification regarding plastic bags: In California, legislation permits grocery stores to provide thicker, reusable plastic bags instead of the thinner plastic bags commonly found in many other states, as noted by a user on X.
Harris’ unexpected reversal on her previously controversial stance regarding straws appears to be a strategic move by her struggling campaign to present the Democratic candidate as more pragmatic on various issues.
The couple’s recent public appearance comes amid reports from insiders indicating that their marriage is facing difficulties following Trump’s election victory and his return to the White House.
Earlier this week, the Daily Mail disclosed that Kamala is privately attributing the significant election loss to Doug and is contemplating her future political strategies.
“There’s ample blame to distribute in Kamala’s view, and Doug is not exempt,” a source commented.
